SEPTEMBER 2008

Sign-Up (8/25/2008)

  • All prospective new scouts and a parent are welcome to attend a get-acquainted meeting with Troop 174 Scout Leaders at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Activity Center (gym) from 7-8:00 p.m. on August 25, 2008.

Week 1 (9/8/2008)

  • Pass out Scout Handbooks to registered first-year scouts.
  • Practice Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan in small groups (Req’t T-7).
  • Read (for next week) Totin’ Chip information about knives, saws, and axes Pages77-85 in Scout Handbook (Req’t 2-2C).

Week 2 (9/15/2008)

  • Discuss hike (campout) preparation and Totin' Chip information.
  • Read (before hike) campfire building information (pages 249-252) in Scout Handbook (Req’t 2-2d).
  • Read (for next week) “First Aid Information”, pages 288 and 291-297 in Scout Handbook.
  • Practice: Oath, Law, Motto, Slogan at home.

September Scout Skills Hike (9/19/2008 to 9/21/2008)

  • Totin’ Chip demonstration.
  • Proper care, sharpening, and use of knife, saw, and ax.
  • Earn Totin’ Chip Card. Sharpen and use knife, saw, and ax.
  • Build fire using tools.
  • Light a fire and camp stove.
  • Tenderfoot Athletic Skills (page 57). FIRST TEST.
  • Pitch a tent and dining fly and learn about patrol boxes and bus.
  • Pass out ropes and introduce:
    • square knot (join two ropes together);
    • two half hitches (tie rope to post);
    • taut-line hitch (tie tent/fly rope to peg).
  • Have fun.

Week 5 (10/6/2007) (Wreath Kick-Off)

  • Discuss Poisonous Plants, Safe Hiking/Lost Rules, and Buddy System.
  • Discuss Flag Retirement Ceremony.
  • Prepare for second-class cooling.
  • Divide into cooking groups.
  • Read menu as a group.
  • Learn how to prepare, cook, and clean.
  • Give menu to bus crew.
  • Discuss hike (campout) preparation.
  • Stay with your patrol.
  • Each patrol member should share in meal preparation and cleanup.
  • Patrol should eat together.

October Cooking and Hiking (10/10/2008 to 10/12/2008)

  • Tenderfoot Athletic Skills Test (page 57). SECOND TEST - thirty days later.
  • Cook lunch to fulfill second class cooking requirement 2g. (read pages 257-61 and 265-68). Small groups of first-year scouts will build fire, cook a hot lunch, and clean up properly.
  • Lunch Menu: Over an open fire, cook a seasoned chicken breast half on a forked stick. Eat cooked chicken breast on a bun as a sandwich. Roast soaked cob corn in husk over a bed of charcoal. Bake Poppin' Fresh Biscuits in a pie pan in a reflector oven before a roaring fire. Granola Bars and Gatorade.
  • Five-mile hike (in afternoon - need hiking boots and water bottle).
  • Lead “Flag Retirement” ceremony at Saturday Night Campfire.

Week 6 (10/13/2008) (Columbus Day)

  • Say Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan.
  • Read (for next week):

    • Blisters on Hand and Foot (page 308);
    • Minor Burns or Scalds (first degree) (page 306);

  • Get ready for Scoutmaster Conference to take place on November hike (each Scout must be ready to answer questions about Tenderfoot requirements posed by an Assistant Scoutmaster).

  • Hike preparation for cold weather camping
  • (Wool socks, polypropylene shirts, fleece, shell, warm pants, gloves, new bedclothes at night, sleeping bag and blanket).

November Thanksgiving Hike (11/7/2008 to 11/9/2008)

  • Make up activities for newer first year Scouts.
  • Scoutmaster Conferences (after lunch).

Week 10 (11/10/2007)

  • Discuss Compass and Map information on pages 66-72 for Scouts completing

      “Tobogganing” Hike (1/16/2009 to 1/18/2009}
      January hike is January 16-18 (Friday-Sunday) near Pokagan State Park. The boys are sleeping outside in tents (sometimes it is cold, but no one has frozen yet). The bus will be there. We are also providing a heated tent. If someone gets cold, they can go inside to warm up.

*** Note to Scouts and Parents: In February we will work on map and compass as well as first aid. Each scout needs to know all first aid information in Chapter 11 of the Scout Handbook to earn the First Class rank. Some of this must be known to earn the Second Class rank (see Second Class reqts. 6a-c).


FEBRUARY 2009

"FIRST AID" MONTH

February is first aid month. We have covered almost all of Chapter 11 (First Aid) in the handbook during troop meetings. Please use the next three weeks to work with your scout to memorize the material (see especially the material in the colored boxes) in that chapter. The sooner the better. They will need to know this material some for Second Class Scoutmaster Conference and some for First Class. The Second Class Scoutmaster Conference and Board of Review will be in late March. Early preparation here (as in life) is essential. Second Class quizzing about first aid is still fairly easy, but First Class quizzing is much more demanding. * * * They must know the whole Chapter 11 for First Class quiz which will begin this coming October.

Week 18 (2/2/2009)

  • Check off Wild Animal List on page 92 and Plant List on page 133.
  • Practice knots (square knot, two half hitches, taut line hitch).
  • Introduce Bow-Line Knot, Sheet Bend Knot, Clove Hitch, and Timber Hitch.

2/9/2009

  • Ski trip preparation only. Only skiers attend
  • Health forms must be turned in.

2/12/2009 to 2/15/2009

  • Ski trip to Winter Park, Colorado for all scouts selling wreaths and earning at least 110 wreath points. (One point awarded for 24" wreaths, two points awarded for all others.)

2/16/2009

  • No meeting; return from ski trip.

  • Orienteering course (pp. 118-120).
  • Measuring heights (pp. 121-125).

  • Plan and prepare written patrol menu and make a food list for six scouts in a patrol. (Example follows - create a different menu)
  • Breakfast: Pancakes (Bisquick) and scrambled eggs.
  • Lunch: Cold cuts and sandwiches (to be eaten on the trail).
  • Dinner: Jambalya, biscuits (Bisquick), and brownies.

Week 21 (3/9/2009)

  • Turn in written patrol menu and food list.

  • Participate in troop orienteering exercise.

  • Participate in patrol meetings in preparation for the "remote" hike.

"Remote" Hike (4/17/2009 to 4/19/2009)

  • Canoe trip in Ft. Wayne. Camp at one campsite on Friday night and canoe (with all gear on board) to a new campsite on Saturday night.

Week 26 (4/20/2009)

  • Complete review of first aid topics.
  • Heart attack (page 298, Scout Handbook).
  • Severe bleeding (pages 299-301).
  • Internal poisoning (page 302).
  • Shock (page 303).
  • Other first aid cases (pages 304-321).

Week 27 (4/27/2009)

  • Scouts need to prepare (for next week) a list identifying ten separate troop service
  • project activities that they participated in to satisfy First-Class Req't. 3 (pages126‑127).
  • Fill out page 75 to list first five activities.
  • Fill out page 127 to list second five activities.

  • Awards ceremony under big tent followed by picnic dinner prepared by famous "Bus Crew."
  • Rank advancement, merit badges, and special troop awards will be presented after Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony.
