STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS

READ THE SCOUT HANDBOOK TO KNOW THE SEVEN EAGLE SCOUT RANK REQUIREMENTS!

Do not start on your Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Plan until you have a plan for satisfying Eagle Scout Rank Requirement No. 4 relating to Leadership/Positions of Responsibility within the troop. While a Life Scout, you must serve actively for a period of 6 months in an approved position of responsibility in the troop. Meet with Mr. Otte in advance to review that plan.

Once you have earned the Life Rank and about 15-16 merit badges, it is time to fill out your Eagle Scout Rank Application, select an Eagle Project, write up your proposed project in your Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook, and get your project approved by the Troop and by the North Star District. See www.nesa.org/trail.html. You cannot start until you get both approvals.

Scouts should contact Troop 174 Eagle Coordinator Jack Slattery ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) with any questions they have. Parents are welcome to contact me ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) with any questions they have right now or later.

Make sure your Eagle Application is filled out early. This takes longer than you think. Prepare a "Statement of Ambition" as directed on page 2 of the application. Call Steve Heath at the Scout Office (925-1900, ext. 244) and have him send you a copy ofyour Advancement Record. Use the dates on that record when you fill out the application. Your dates must match the dates on file in the Scout Office. Your application will be rejected later on by Steve Heath if the dates don't match.

To find an Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, first meet with several organizations and find out what projects are available. Bring a parent to the meeting. Then pick a project that will allow you to lead about 5 to 10 volunteers outside of your family as they work about 100 hours total. This more of a leadership project than it is a service project. It is much harder to select a project first and then try to recruit an organization that needs your project.

Do not start work on your project until it has been approved in writing by (in this order) Eagle Coordinator Jack Slattery, Scoutmaster Frank Otte, Troop Committee Chairman Dick Rocap, and Charlie Meyer (a volunteer representing the North Star District of the Crossroads of America Council).

You will need to make a very detailed duty roster for your volunteers and include this in your proposal. Once Mr. Rocap has signed your Workbook, you can send it to Charlie Meyer ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). Mr. Meyer will review it and return it to you in a few weeks. He may ask you to make changes.

The North Star District will tum down any proposals in which the Scout has already started or completed the project. It is okay to meet with sponsors, take measurements, and develop a project plan in advance. Also, projects requiring significant involvement by contractors or other professionals (other than as a consultant) will not be approved.

Once your project is finished, complete the write-up in your Eagle Project Leadership Service Workbook. Complete your Eagle Application by making sure that all of your merit badge and advancement dates match Scout Office records. Have your Eagle application signed by Mr. Rocap. Have your application and workbook signed by Scoutmaster Frank Otte. Take your completed Eagle application and Eagle workbook to the Scout Office and give it to Steve Heath. He will check your application during the next few weeks. If it is complete, he will send it to Charlie Meyer. Mr. Meyer will contact Troop 174 and notify Mr. Slattery of the date of your Eagle Scout Board of Review.

The Board of Review is run by North Star District. Each month only four Scouts have the opportunity to attend an Eagle Board of Review on the second Wednesday evening of each month at Second Presbyterian Church. The Board will last about 40 to 45 minutes and normally Mr. Slattery or Mr. Dann will sit in on the Board of Review as the representative of Troop 174.
