May Hike 2010
When: May 14-16, 2010
Where: Haimbaugh Round Barn Farm, Rochester, IN
The May hike was Troop 174’s Fun Hike. We canoed 14 miles down the Tippecanoe River. The trip took a total of about 5 hours to complete. At first we were going to have to go canoeing in nearby Palestine Lake because the river was up from recent rain. However, the river went down so we were able to canoe the river. We had pretty nice weather for the first half of the hike, however after we were done canoeing we were graced with some rain on Saturday evening. We did not have Mass this Hike but had a very fun and important Campfire. At the campfire the current Order of the Arrow members tapped out the new candidate members. These few selected people will have to go through the Ordeal this summer. The Ordeal is a well-kept secret. This is due to the fact that candidates take an oath of silence during the Ordeal. The Troop Committee selected these few scouts to take place in the Ordeal.

April Hike 2010
Where: Shirley Creek Trail, Hoosier National Forest, South of Bedford
When: April 16-18, 2010
What: Remote Hike/Backpacking
We came down Friday night and met up with our patrols at the trail head. We then got our unique route maps and headed out to the trail with our backpacks and hiked about a mile to find a campsite before it got dark. The weather was okay; a little cloudy and it sprinkled a little bit. However, the stars came out on Friday night for camping in the woods. We had great weather for backpacking on Saturday and Sunday, after raining heavily on Friday during the day.. The terrain was very rugged and had a 300ft elevation change. We ate on our own Friday before we got to camp so we didn’t have to cook on the trail while it was dark, however we could bring snacks.

The March Hike was and fun and very educational Hike. All of the Scouts went out into the woods to do some cross country orienteering. The weather was okay but it was windy and overcast all day buy luckily the rain held off until Saturday Evening so no one got wet during the hike. Our hike reps, Tim Morris and Tommy Beckrich, put together a great course. This is was their 18th year and unfortunately the last for the Mr. Beckerich. We arrived Friday night to a wonderfully cooked meal by the bus crew and pitched our tents ready for an exciting next day.

When: January 29-31, 2010
The January Hike was one of the best ever and a great way to start 2010. All the scouts were able to go on a bus tour of the entire facility and then shoot the weapon simulators. We had our usual Saturday night campfire and Father Waldeton served Mass. The weather was very nice, but a bit cold, also we didn't have any snow. While we were there the base was having it largest troop movement since WW II, with 6,000 troops being trained prior to being shipped overseas.

November Hike 2009
Where: Camp Rotary, Crawfordsville
When: November 13-15, 2009
The November Hike was a fantastic mix of Fun and Education. The Hike was centered on Scout Skills as we had our annual Scout Olympics. The First Year scouts tested their camping knowledge with their Tenderfoot Board of Reviews. We also had a great Saturday night campfire run by the Communication Merit Badge group centered on the Olympics. Every patrol was required to make a patrol flag for this hike. Each patrol also picked an animal and a patrol yell. We had two awesome Hike reps, Jack Slattery and Tom Wadelton, who put together a great Hike. The weather for the weekend was super with no rain; it was also very warm for November. It was very clear and if you found a spot in the trees you could see many, many stars.

October Hike 2009
Where: Nicholas Farm-Parke County,
When: October16-18, 2009
At the October Hike the First Year Scouts went on a five-mile hike for the Second Class Rank. The older Scouts were doing a survival weekend activity. We were again fortunate enough to have Father Waldeton with us to celebrate Mass. Our Saturday night campfire did not take place because we were all cooking in our shelters. Luckily, there was no rain for the weekend. We had a former Green Beret, Dr Bruce Finney, who came in and helped us out on our survival skills. He also visited with us at the Monday meeting before the hike.
